Key Responsibilities of an MLRO:
- Monitoring Transactions:
- Keeps an eye on financial transactions for suspicious or unusual activity that might indicate money laundering.
- Filing Suspicious Activity Reports (SARs):
If something looks suspicious, the MLRO must report it to the relevant financial intelligence authority (like the Qatar Financial Information Unit - QFIU).Ensures the company complies with Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and Counter-Terrorist Financing (CTF) regulations. Acts as the main contact point between the company and regulatory bodies such as the Qatar Financial Centre Regulatory Authority (QFCRA).Makes sure the company properly vets its clients and partners to prevent dealing with high-risk or criminal entities.7
- Compliance Oversight:
- Internal Policies & Training:
- Develops AML policies and procedures.
- Trains staff to recognize and deal with suspicious transactions.
- Liaison with Authorities:
- Customer Due Diligence (CDD):
- Verifying the legitimacy of overseas partners.
- Ensuring that salary transfers, recruitment fees, or visa payments are not being used to launder money.
- Preventing fake job offers used as fronts for illicit financial flows.
